conversion of offices back to houses, Altrincham
The reinstatement of a traditional row of historic cottages in the centre of Altrincham, back to their original use as individual dwellings, following a conversion to office space. The cottages are stripped back to their original fabric and extended to the rear with new contemporary additions in burnt oak cladding. A recently constructed retail unit, incongruous to the row of traditional cottages, is demolished and replaced with a contemporary new infill dwelling. The new dwelling is expressed in handmade dark brick with full height glazing and provides an uncompromisingly modern addition to the row of cottages. The new infill successfully mediates between the architectural language of the traditional red brick cottages and the distinct black and white landmark building located on the corner of Normans Place.
